Hello and welcome to the second edition of the as yet un-named Southowram Cricket Club newsletter. May I be the last to wish a Happy New Year to you all.
I think this news letter could do with a name and I am open to clean and sensible suggestions for a name. Please pass any names you can think of to Simon Walker or by email to newsletter@southowramcc.co.uk.
AGM
Southowram CC’s annual general meeting took place on
18th November. For those members who are not aware, the purpose of the meeting is to summarise the previous year, present the accounts and to elect the officers for the club. This year a rewritten constitution was presented and adopted by the club. The constitution has been updated to make it user friendly to read and to formalise the club’s junior policies for Clubmark.
Changes have been made to the management committee owing to various retirements. Sharon Nutbrown takes over as Bar Chair from Dave Hirst who has retired from the post after 3 years. Dave will remain on the committee for 2008. Other changes see Dave Jowett and Ian Gledhill standing down from the committee although Ian is effectively co-opted on to the committee as a team captain. There are two new members of the committee for 2008, Lesley James and Marc Greatorex.
The most significant change was Peter Jowett standing down as Chairman. Peter felt that owing to potential work commitments he would be in-effective in the role of chairman for the foreseeable future. He has been replaced by Vin Mylett who we hope will be able to take the club to the next level.
Sportsman’s Dinner
The Sportsman’s Dinner was held on the 9th November with Gladstone Small as the special guest. The Master of Ceremonies for the evening was Andy Measey who provided his usual array of bad jokes to entertain between speakers.
Thanks must go to the organisers Peter Jowett and Vin Mylett as well as the bar staff for the evening, Gail, Sharon and Dave Griffiths.
Kids Christmas Party
This ever popular even took place on 16th December and included a disco, magician and a visit from Santa Claus. Over 40 children attended the event and all seemed to enjoy it. Thanks go to Sharon, Bronwen and Santa for helping the event run smoothly and to anyone involved on the day.
Winter Nets
The winter nets started on the
9th January. These net sessions are provided for all members to attend are not restricted to just nets. The plan is to use the hall for fitness training and coaching sessions as well as the regular netting sessions. The 2 hour sessions are taking place at Hipperholme and Lightcliffe School on a Wednesday night between 8pm and 10pm. Unfortunatly there are no nets on Wednesday 5th March due to Exams.
Forthcoming Events
The Great Annual Quiz
Ian and Ian’s (Uttley and Gledhill) now infamous annual quiz takes place on Saturday 26th January 2008 at the cricket club. This quiz only happens once a year but it is well worth the wait. A pie and pea supper will be provided.
Cabaret Evening
Saturday 23rd February sees the welcome return of the Cabaret evening. This year’s acts are magician Andy Stockdale and comedian Jack Daniels, both of whom are back by popular demand. Tickets are priced at £5 and must be bought in advance. Please contact Peter Jowett for details.
Signing on day.
This year we will be holding two signing on days, one for all members on Sunday 16th March and the second on 9th March specifically for the juniors. Signing on fees for the 2008 season remain unchanged for all senior members. There will be a meeting for junior parents on Friday 15th February to discuss plans for the 2008 season.
Easter Egg Hunt
The Easter Egg Hunt is one of our most popular events of the year with fun for all. The hunt is open to both young and old, although the adults can opt to search for a bottle of beer if they wish. This year’s event will be held on Easter Sunday, 23rd March.
Full details are not available at the time of writing this newsletter but a notice will be displayed in the club nearer the event, alternativly please contact Sharon Nutbrown, Laura Pollard or any member of the committee for further details.
Team Bonding Weekend
In preparation for the 2008 season Ian Uttley is organising a team bonding weekend in Ambleside on 6th April. This is a strictly men only event and will involve team building events such as hiking, problem solving, elbow excercises, etc.
Numbers are limited to around 20 to 25 and there is a cost of approximatly £30 per person. See Ian Uttley for full details.
Congratulations
Congratulations to Andrew and Clare Bevan on the birth of their son Matthew on Christmas Day.

And Finally …
The Andy Measey Crap Joke Of the Month!
Two Scottish nuns have just arrived in USA by boat and one says to the other, "I hear that the people of this country actually eat dogs.
"Odd," her companion replies, "but if we shall live in America, we might as well do as the Americans do."
Nodding emphatically, the mother superior points to a hot dog vendor and they both walk towards the cart. "Two dogs, please," says one.
The vendor is only too pleased to oblige and he wraps both hot dogs in foil and hands them over the counter.
Excited, the nuns hurry over to a bench and begin to unwrap their 'dogs.' The mother superior is first to open hers.
She begins to blush and then, staring at it for a moment, leans over to the other nun and whispers cautiously, "What part did you get?"
